Podcast #3 principles of design

 Define principles of design?
Concepts used to arrange the structural elements of composition

What do the principles of design affect?
The way in which these principles are applied affects the expressive content, or the message of the work

What is the principle of repetition?
Repeating some aspects or element of the design throughout the entire document

Describe ways that the principle of repetition helps the composition/audience?
Acts as a visual key that ties your piece together and controls the reader’s eye and helps keep their attention on the piece.

What are ways that you can incorporate repetition into your designs?
Bold font, thick line, certain bullet, color, design element, particular format, and spatial relationship

What should you avoid when working with repetition?
Its important not to repeat so much that it becomes annoying or overwhelming

What is the principle of proportion/scale?
The relative size and scale of the various elements in a design

What is the most universal standard of measure when judging size?
Human body we judge appropriateness of size by that measure

How can the principle of proportion/scale be used as an attention getter?
Unusual or unexpected scale

What is the principle of balance?
Distribution of heavy and light elements on the page

Which kinds of elements/shapes visually weigh heavier/greater?
Irregular shapes

What is another name for symmetrical balance?
Formal balances

Define symmetrical balance?
Occurs when the weight of a composition is evenly distributed around a central vertical or horizontal axis

What is another name for asymmetrical balance?
Informal balance

Define asymmetrical balance?
Occurs when the weight of a composition is not evenly distributed around the axis

What is the principle of emphasis?
Stressing of a particular are of focus rather than the maze of details of equal importance

What happens to a design that has no focus?
Nothing stands out

What is a focal point and how is it created?
Creates a center of focus, an area where the eye tends to look first

How many components of a composition can be a focal point?
No more than one

What ways can emphasis be created in a design?
By sudden change in direction, size, shape, texture, color, tone, and line

What is the principle of unity?
Wholeness of composition

What three ways can unity be obtained?
1.put things close together

2.make it similar

3.make same shapes

What is the principle of variety?
Difference and diversity making it interesting

What ways can a designer add variety to a design?
Texture, color, shapes, and alter their contrast, tone, and intensity

Why is it important to find the right balance between unity and variety?
Too much unity can be boring, however too much variety can look chaotic

What is figure?
The part of a composition that we pay attention to

What is another name for figure?
Positive space

What is ground?
The surrounded area around the figure

What is another name for ground?
Negative space

When a composition is abstract (has no recognizable subject) what will the figure depend on? What does that mean?
Abstract relationship between visual elements

Why must a designer consider the composition as a whole?
It’s a mistake to only plan the figure

What is the principle of rhythm?
Continuity, recurrence or organized movement in space and time

How is rhythm achieved?
Orderly repetition of any element, line, shape, value, tone, and texture

What three ways can rhythm occur in a design?
1.intervals between the elements

2.more organic flowing sense of movement

3.swquence of shapes through a progression of steps

How does rhythm help a composition/design?
Can help deliver the message by controlling the viewers eye movements

What is the principle of contrast?
Greater difference the greater contrast

How can contrast help a design?
Draw the viewers eye to the piece
What is wrong with having too much or too little contrast in a design?
Becomes monotonous and boring

What is the key to working with contrast?
Make sure the difference is obvious

What are some common ways of creating contrast?
Creating differences

Color Schemes

 02.jpg

This image is using analogous color scheme, using colors of red, orange, and brown, its also using warm colors to create space .

03.jpgThis image is using shades of blue adding depth and the lighter blue in the back makes it look likes its far away and its also using cool colors to create a soothing impression.

04.jpg I think this is using secondary colors because its using mixes of greens and blues and yellows.

05.gif This image is using a little bit of split complementary color scheme because its using greens, oranges, and dark red-ish orange.

01.jpg This image is using triadic color scheme, its using green, orange, and purple.
1.Why is file management (organizing your design files) an integral part of the job/assignment process?

-It is more easy to find your work and it makes you look organized and responsible.

2.What is the resolution necessary for printing raster images (images from Photoshop)?

-300 Dpi

3.What is the resolution necessary for displaying images on a monitor or website?

-72 Dpi

4.Name the principles of design and define each in your own words?

Balance- The image has to be balanced with color, lines, etc

Proportion-The image should be proportionate and pleasing to the eye

Rhythm-The image should be equal and have even amount of space between the object

Emphasis- The man idea of the image should be emphasized and should have details that draw your eyes to it

Unity- The image itself should be unified the object should be corresponding with things around it

Review Week 9

1.Compare and contrast vector graphics and pixel images.
-Vector graphics are creating images with lines and its like connecting the dots and Pixel images are paintings that have dots called pixels.
2.What resolution is necessary to print raster images?
-300 dpi
3.What resolution is necessary to display raster images on the internet?

-72 dpi

Review Week 8

Why must designers pay close attention to how color is utilized within a composition?- Helps viewers maximize productivity and minimize visual fatigue to relax the whole body

Why is the color wheel an important tool for graphic designers?
- It helps the designers with putting together primary and secondary colors

Find an example of neutral colors utilized within a design (hint: google poster design). Near the sample, discuss why you feel the designer included neutral colors within the composition.

This poster has brown as its background color and it makes the red stand out making your eye go to the hat and the hat has the main point of the design on it so i think that the designer did a good job of placing everything and he placed colors and how he placed them.

Briefly describe how we "see" the color of an object?
-We see the reflected color

Podcast #2 Color Theory

The right use of color can do what?
-Maximize productivity and minimize visual fatigue to relax the whole body
Within the electromagnetic spectrum, which waves allow us to see color?
-Visible light
How do we see color if objects "have no color of their own"?
-Reflected color
What is a glass prism?
-Transparent triangular object that breaks white light into all the colors of the visible light spectrum
What seven colors result when white light is refracted through a prism?
-Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, and Violet
Describe hue?
-The color itself, each different hue is a different reflected wavelength
When does white light occur?
-All wavelengths are reflected back to your eye
When does black light occur?
-No light is reflected back to your eye
How color is perceived depends on what?
-Type of light it is seen with
What is a color wheel?
-Visual tool that shows the relationship between primary secondary tertiary colors
What are primary colors? Name them?
-Red, Blue, and Yellow
What are secondary colors? Name them?
-Two primary colors mixed together, Orange, Green, and Violet
What are tertiary colors? Name them?
-Primary and secondary colors together, named by the colors used to create them
What are neutral colors? How can they be created?
-Don’t show up on the color wheel, colors of very low saturation
How can a neutral color help a design?
-Help put the focus on other colors
What are complementary colors? Name them?
-Positioned opposite of each other on the color wheel, Red, Green, Orange, Blue, Violet, and Yellow
What is color value?
-Lightness and Darkness of a hue or color
What is a shade?
-Adding black to a hue to produce a low-value color
What is a tint?
-Adding white to a hue to produce a high-value color
What is saturation/intensity?
-Brightness of a color
What happens when you mix complementary colors together?
-Produce a dull tone and increase color intensity
